Ninety years of corporate espionage and reverse engineering led to the manufacture of the MDG-1T Rakshasa. An obsolete variation of an already inferior facsimile in the eyes of the Inner Sphere; it is a welcome addition to the militaries of the Periphery. At one-third the procurement cost of an original MDG-1A, the “Taurian Rakshasa” leverages technologies common before the Helm Memory Core revolution. Therefore compatible replacement parts are readily available. Though the obvious replication of a Federated Suns BattleMech, Taurus Territorial Industries proved successful at avoiding Taurian prejudice of all things Davion, through aggressive propaganda emphasizing the MDG-1T as a Periphery duplication of the Timber Wolf. In addition, AFFS disappointment with the Rakshasa mitigated widespread deployment or promotion, thus TDF garrisons did not encounter them to develop a negative association.

RVG-5L Ravager

The RVG-5L Ravager was a military thought experiment between House Liao and House Kurita defense contractors to develop a BattleMech outside the paradigm of both Successor States’ battlefield traditions. The project failed to achieve that objective. It did however, result in something best described as a miniature Marauder. Expressing disappointment, the Draconis Combine turned away from the design. Open to trial and error, the Capellan Confederation constructed prototypes for field tests. Less than half the tonnage and double the ground speed of a Marauder, the Ravager leverages the forefront of military technologies: an endo composite inner structure, five point five tons of heavy ferro-fibrous armor, and an extralight gyro. Triple light particle projector cannons, two with capacitors, give the RVG-5L an effective offense. A pair of small lasers deal with common infantry and pointblank opposition. As the verdict stands, for its weight class the Ravager hits hard and can take a beating, but suffers extralight engine fragility.

The MAD-9LP Marauder exemplifies a famous stratagem: “in battle there are not more than two methods of attack, the direct and the indirect, yet these two in combination give rise to an endless series of maneuvers.” At a glance the Liao variant is little different from it’s siblings, and compares favorably with the iconic loadout of two particle projector cannons with a tertiary autocannon. That assumption is the fatal mistake: three Ceres Arms Crusher plasma rifles signify the core offense of this particular Marauder. In addition to vaporizing two tons of armor in a single salvo, such a combined strike would (on average) generate enough thermal energy to overwhelm five double heat sinks on the target. An opponent who might survive the direct damage, will always be weakened by the indirect damage. With the right timing after an opposition alpha strike, the MAD-9LP can coerce enemy BattleMechs to shutdown or roast MechWarriors alive.

Compared to the gauss rifle by ardent supporters, the extraordinary destructive output and immense range of the Republic Institute Strategic Combat Hyper Laser compels counter argument these advantages outweigh the fragile and volatile shortcomings. Such experimentation lead to the development of a Hunchback replacing its iconic autocannon with a RISC Hyper Laser. To optimize precision accuracy, the pilot receives assistance from an advance targeting computer. To mitigate damage received from opposition, the delicate hyper laser hides deep in protective armored components. To maximize battlefield positioning, the BattleMech is equipped with Rawling 50 jump jets to maneuver 120 meters, horizontal or vertical, without hinderance. It seemed the HBK-4R could address all criticism towards practical application for the RISC Hyper Laser. Alas, then came the tragic fall of the Republic of the Sphere.

Dedicated rearguard BattleMechs are noticeable rarities in the Draconis Combine. The THG-4C3 stands among those unique few. Operating four independent command, control, and communication systems in simultaneous encrypted broadcast, little tonnage remains for direct battlefield weapons. The units are nonetheless sought by commanders who desire force multiplication stratagems. Though its, “all eggs in one basket,” approach presents significant risk if neutralized, the Thug variant offers the widest C3 deployment from a single package.

Exclusive to House Kurita regiments, CRB-43 are factory rebuilds of CRB-20 from Operation ROSEBUD. Deciphering Helm Memory Core schematics, Draconis Combine factories could restore endo steel and ferro-fibrous technologies. Furthermore, to align with DCMS Quartermaster preferences, its main armaments were shifted to particle projector cannons. Though analysts dismiss the CRB-43 as banal equivalents to the legendary Star League CRB-27b, heavy particle projector cannons are BattleMech decapitators. An uncommon outcome, but a trait no previous Crab variant could boast.

Despite efforts to the contrary, origin of the Dullahan remains unknown. Conspiracy theories, unsurprisingly, implicate the Word of Blake. Its schematics were publicly released across the Free Worlds League social infonet in late 3067 without a traceable source. Initially thought to be an elaborate hoax, BattleMech experts realized the design was fully functional. Brigadier Corporation, renown builders of four-legged ‘Mechs, assembled a prototype at behest of the Free Worlds League Military. Interest abated once structural flaws in the turret rotation collar, and miscalibrated lateral shifts from the gyro were identified. Brigadier Corporation offered to correct the problem, but FWLM representatives turned down procurement. Nevertheless, a successful prototype demonstration was greenlit to utilize in viral marketing.

Market as a budget alternative to the original Hollander, the fifth generation interpretation mimics its progenitor with a 600,000 C-Bill reduction. Two-third the tonnage, a BZK-S3 nonetheless retains the armor, firepower, and maneuverability of the BZK-F3. Key to this achievement was substitution of the burdensome gauss rifle with the largest Inner Sphere particle projector cannon in production. Unfortunately, the design continues to lack an auxiliary weapon. Initial prototypes addressed this problem via lightweight gyro to incorporate a medium laser. However both excess features were inevitably removed to reduce cost.

The Bombard II is an assault scale upgrade of the BMB-010 Bombard. Evidence indicates its origin as a one-off Solaris VII contender constructed during the Federated Commonwealth Civil War. Inevitably seized by the military, the hundred ton conscript proved suitable for tactical urban warfare. Twin rotary autocannons and double large lasers provide a staggering barrage that shred five tons of armor in seconds. The omission of an extralight fusion engine allows the design to continue combat with the lost of side torsos. Its greatest weakness, a fragile composite structure, is safeguarded beneath eighteen tons of light ferro-fibrous protection. The ponderous speed of the Bombard II is partly offset through jump jets able to maneuver ninety meters across the battlefield in a single leap.

First seen on Midale by DMI operatives in 3135, the HBK-4T became a prevailing enigma. Why would foreign benefactors provide modified Hunchback to the Taurian Concordat? Equally important: who provided them? The Lyran Commonwealth and Clan Sea Fox often atop the conspirator list, though no one can realistically explain how either benefit from the arrangement. Taurus Territorial Industries insist the idea was a domestic endeavor, though fail to provide conclusive evidence. These mysteries overshadow the HBK-4T itself, acknowledged as an adequate indirect fire BattleMech in military circles. It mounts the fearsome Telos ThunderShot Thunderbolt, enjoying twice the effective range of a factory issue Kali Yama Big Bore, without sacrificing firepower. Target Acquisition Gear allows the Hunchback to rain additional destruction from distant allies.
